I recently was interviewed on Dublin City Radio by Victoria Mary Clarke. You can listen to the full interview here. In this article I will explain the crux of the interview.
Are you stuck in a rut?
I think it is natural to be utterly confused about what you want in life. What career to follow, who to marry, when to settle down — it all feels daunting. Unfortunately, I felt the similar feeling when started my career in accountancy. It went well and the money was good. However, I realised money isn’t everything and satisfaction is more important. As you work day to day you can end up getting stuck in a rut by doing the same thing every day and you essentially neglect the balance in your life. You need time to reflect on what you like.
To take time to reflect I did a vision board. I wrote on it I wanted to write a book and also that I wanted to travel to help discover myself. Travelling helped me discover my path, different cultures can reframe situations. For instance, I noticed that in Cuba the people have less material wealth but look happier. I started to examine deep inside what makes me tick and you have to do the same:
- What would you like to do?
- What do you value?
- Would you like to change career?
- Shift the thinking or you won’t do it
- Have a long term plan. Construct your new life
- Vision board – I would like to write a book, I want to grow, look deep inside
- Create your goals
- Make a plan
This is the same process I went through and now I have finished the first draft of my book and started a new journey as a life coach and business coach.
One of the best lessons I learned in coaching was the art of active listening. I don’t think most people truly understand what this means, but if you watched a coach or therapist, you might see. It’s about showing that you are listening without interruption, asking follow-up questions and allowing for silences that seem awkward from afar.
Today I am coming up with new ideas every day and constantly changing my mind, life coaching opened me up to a world of other opportunities.
Through all of this, I learned about psychology, self-improvement, positive-action theories and the role that philosophy and spirituality play in each of our lives. At the end of the day, all you can do is follow your heart and keep taking that next step to find out where your journey will take you. Personally, I want to help people through understanding them. That is where my heart lies and that is what my coaching courses have taught me.
