When you make a decision to make a positive change in your life, whether it is to lose weight, get a promotion at work, or stop losing your temper, you are taking a step towards a better you and a better future. However, making changes can be difficult and it does take commitment. Here are some tips on making positive changes in your life.
Tip 1 – Don’t Try to Change Everything At Once
We know that making a change can be difficult. That is why some coaches can work for six months on introducing a single change into a large corporation’s work culture. People have a natural resistance to making changes and old habits are indeed hard to break. This doesn’t mean you can’t make positive changes in your life, but be aware it can be a challenge. If you try to change everything about yourself at once, you will likely become discouraged and give up.
Choose one area you want to change in your life and focus on that area. Once you have successfully changed a bad habit for a good one, you will be more confident and able to make other positive changes in your life.
Tip 2 – Commit to a Making a Change
It generally takes 90 days to create a new habit. It is especially hard to break addictive habits and addicts who attend a 12-step program always celebrate reaching the 90-day mark. When you commit to making a positive change in your life, you need to commit to working on creating new habits for at least three months. Once you have consistently trained your brain in the new habits for that time, you will find it much easier to continue your new habits.
You can mark the date on the calendar and celebrate smaller milestones, such as one week, two weeks, one month, two months, as you reach each milestone. This will help you to maintain your commitment to making the changes.
Tip 3 – Get Support for Making the Change
Few people can soldier on and make a positive change alone. A supportive person who will cheer you on and encourage you to continue on the path of success is essential. Family members can be tremendously encouraging when you want to make a change for the better. Tell your spouse, parents, and children of the change you want to make. You may like to confide in a close friend and ask for additional support as you tackle the challenge of making a positive change in your life.
If you do not find support from close family members or friends, you may need help from a life coach. A personal coach can be a tremendous help as you make positive changes in your life.
Tip 4 – Don’t Give Up If You Slip Up Once
Most people will fall off the bandwagon at least once when first trying to make a life change. Don’t let one little slip ruin your chances of changing your life in a positive way. Instead of thinking how terrible you are for giving in to temptation, think about how far you have come and how much easier it will be to reach your target from now on. This is where the support of others can be motivating and encouraging for you to continue on your path of change.
Persistence always pays off. Keep trying and don’t give up too easily. You can make positive changes in your life, even if you have one small slip up on the path.
Tip 5 – Reward Yourself as You Achieve Small Successes
Keep yourself motivated and committed by giving yourself rewards along the way. You may wish to set small milestones and give yourself a reward when you meet each one. If you lose five pounds, buy yourself a new dress. If you stop smoking for two weeks, buy yourself a new book with the money you have saved. Give yourself rewards that help you to see you are succeeding in making positive changes in your life.
Making positive changes in your life is possible and you can start today. Although making changes takes time, the rewards of making changes now will stay with you for the rest of your life.
